What is a Data Protection Act (DPA)?

The Data Protection Act is a piece of legislation that governs how organisations can handle data and information. It's a law that was passed in 1998, and it requires that any organisation that handles personal information must have in place a "data protection policy" to ensure that they are properly protecting the privacy of the people whose data they use.
